A newish inhaler-looking device called Lumen is on the market and the marketers of the product claims it "hacks" your metabolism and can make your metabolism more "fit" and more "flexible." A Flexible Metabolism is a key to weight loss and overall health. The following review is by Sean Hayes, the CEO of Pliagility.
Basics of the Human Metabolism
In short, our metabolism is the process, within our bodies, that takes your consumed calories and burns these calories in order to fuel all our activities from breathing to working out.
So our metabolism is the process in which our calories are burned by our bodies to produce energy.
One of the main goals of those that are overweight is to burn stored fat. Our metabolism burns a mixture of stored fat and carbs. The ratio of carbs to fat changes depending on a variety of factors, including intensity of exercise (low intensity exercises use more fat as energy), if you are in Ketosis and if you are fasting.
Lumen claims that its device can reveal the type of calories being burned. It claims it can tell us if calories from fat or carbohydrates are being burned at the moment of utilization of Lumen.
To use the device you blow into the device in a similar manner in which you would blow into a breathalyzer. Lumen claims it can, via the Lumen testing device, calculate our Metabolic Flexibility and advise on an appropriate diet based on the ratio of fat and carbs being burned. This sounds great, but issues immediately come to mind that proves that Lumen is not a device needed for students of Pliagility.
Metabolic Inflexibility is Real and Dangerous
Metabolic Inflexibility ("mitochondrial indecision") is your body not burning a mix of fat and carbs in an efficient and effective manner. Science-based research links this metabolic danger to diabetes, obesity, cancer, hypertension and circulation issues. However, the solution by Lumen is not necessary. You do not need a device, like the Lumen, to get your metabolism in check.
In most cases, metabolic inflexibility is caused by a poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle. When you eat whole, unprocessed and a healthy mix of foods, your metabolism, in all but the most extreme situations, shall burn fat and carbs effectively and efficiently. The key is to minimize the consumption of processed foods and follow the Pliagility Nutrition Program and stay lean and strong via the Pliagility Exercise Program.
How Lumen Tracks Metabolic Inflexibility
Lumen, purportedly, provides a score of whether and how much fat your body is burning. A score of 1 means that your body is, primarily, burning fat and thus you should eat more carbs. A score of 5 means you are burning many carbs and thus you need some healthy fats. Between 1 and 5 is purportedly a mix of carbs and fat being burned and you are proposed an eating plan based on this score.
Pliagility Does Not Believe Most Students Need Lumen
Lumen's device and program sounds fine and dandy, but we have a major issue. We should, anyways, be eating healthy and if we do, in all but the most exceptional of cases, we shall not have a metabolic inflexibility issue if we are, also, lean and fit.
The goal is not to find a meaningless short time hack, but to live a healthy lifestyle. We don't need gadgets to live a healthy lifestyle we need knowledge and determination.
